ECSEL JU Grant nr. 692529-2 ECSEL/0002/2015 (H2020-ECSEL-2015-2-IA-two-stage) 39 months (Apr 2016 to Jun 2019) http://www.safecop.eu/ | |
Summary: | SafeCOP targets safety-related Cooperating Cyber-Physical Systems (CO-CPS) characterised by use of wireless communication, multiple stakeholders, dynamic system definitions (openness), and unpredictable operating environments. In this scenario, no single stakeholder has the overall responsibility over the resulted system-of-systems; safe cooperation relies on the wireless communication; and security is an important concern. Although such CO-CPS can successfully address several societal challenges, and can lead to new applications and new markets, their certification and development is not adequately addressed by existing practices. SafeCOP will provide an approach to the safety assurance of CO-CPS, enabling thus their certification and development. The project will define a runtime manager architecture for runtime detection of abnormal behaviour, triggering if needed a safe degraded mode. SafeCOP will also develop methods and tools, which will be used to produce safety assurance evidence needed to certify cooperative functions. SafeCOP will extend current wireless technologies to ensure safe and secure cooperation. SafeCOP will also contribute to new standards and regulations, by providing certification authorities and standardization committees with the scientifically validated solutions needed to craft effective standards extended to also address cooperation and system-of-systems issues. SafeCOP brings clear benefits in terms of cross-domain certification practice and implementations of cooperating systems in all addressed areas: healthcare, maritime, vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicleto-infrastructure (V2I). The advantages include lower certification costs, increased trustworthiness of wireless communication, better management of increasing complexity, reduced effort for verification and validation, lower total system costs, shorter time to market and increased market share. The results are demonstrated in five demonstrators: cooperative moving of empty hospital beds, cooperative bathymetry with boat platoons, vehicle control loss warning, vehicle and roadside units interaction and V2I cooperation for traffic management. The consortium is industry-led, consisting of 7 Large Enterprises, 11 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), working with 6 universities and 5 Research Transfer Organisations. The partners are positioned across the full value chain, from technology provides, to system integrators, OEMs and end-users. The presence of 3 safety assessors and 6 members of standardization bodies facilitates the exploitation of safety assurance results. |

Ricardo Severino participated in the annual review meeting of the SafeCOP project in Brussels
Ricardo Severino participated in the annual review meeting of the SafeCOP project in Brussels, where he presented an overview of the work carried out within the Safe and Secure Wireless Communications work-package, leaded by ISEP. The work-package was quite successful and was approved by the reviewers. Ricardo also gave an overview of the progress in the Portuguese Vehicle Platooning Use Case being developed with GMVIS Skysoft.
HAPPY NEW 2017!
GMV visits CISTER
CISTER has already a long history of collaborations with GMV Portugal, in particular its Homeland Security and Defence Division. On the 12th of May, CISTER hosted a meeting with another division of GMV Portugal, Transport and Mobility, to explore new collaboration opportunities. GMV is a leader in solutions for aerospace and transportation industry, which constitutes an important strategic sector for CISTER. During the meeting, tasks on the joint use case implementations in the ongoing ECSEL projects SafeCOP and ENABLE-S3 were also discussed. GMV personnel Bruno Gonçalves and Paulo Gomes (Head of Road & Automotive Section - Transport & Mobility) also familiarized themselves with CISTER's facilities and CISTER's CITech – Industry Transfer Center, where several demonstrators were shown.
Kick Off meeting of ECSEL project SafeCOP
CISTER researchers Ricardo Severino and Eduardo Tovar participated in the kick-off meeting of this recently approved ECSEL project. SafeCOP addresses safety-related cooperating cyber-physical systems, characterized by use of wireless communication, multiple stakeholders, dynamic system definitions and unpredictable operating environments.
CISTER is leading the work package related to safe and secure wireless cooperation for Cyber-Physical Systems. This package will evaluate the adequacy of COTS and standard wireless technologies, and extend current wireless protocols for safe and secure cooperation. In this project, CISTER will also be involved in a vehicle platooning use case. SafeCOP partners include Thales, SINTEF, KTH, SICS and and key national industrial players such as GMV Skysoft and Tekever.
