CISTER/FEUP host computer science expert Prof. Xiaoming Fu

4, Feb, 2024
From February 4th to 6th, CISTER/FEUP hosted Prof. Xiaoming Fu, a prominent expert in the field of computer science, who delivered a seminar entitled “Edge-Cloud Collaborative Computing for Cooperative Connected Intelligent Vehicles”.

In this talk, he addressed the problem of optimizing network communication and computing resources to enhance the efficiency and reliability of intelligent vehicle systems. Prof. Fu also discussed various challenges that arise with the implementation of machine learning technologies, such as the need for robust, fault-tolerant network architectures that can dynamically adapt to changing conditions in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. He highlighted how cooperative intelligence among vehicles, facilitated by edge-cloud computing, could significantly improve traffic management, reduce congestion, and enhance road safety. The seminar showcased examples where machine learning algorithms, running on distributed computing platforms, analyze and predict traffic patterns, adjust routes in real-time, and manage the network load effectively.

Xiaoming Fu received his Ph.D. degree in computer science from Tsinghua University, China, in 2000. He has been a Professor and the Head of the Computer Networks Group, University of Göttingen, Germany since 2007. He is a principal scientist at the Center for Internet & Society, Fudan University, China. He has also held visiting positions at ETSI, University of Cambridge, Columbia University, Tsinghua University, and UCLA. He is a Fellow of IEEE, a Distinguished Member of ACM, a Fellow of IET, and a Member of Academia Europaea.
