John Harrison Kurunathan has successfully defended his PhD. thesis, supervised by Eduardo Tovar, Ricardo Severino, and Anis Koubâa, at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, located in Porto, Portugal.
His thesis, entitled “Improving QoS of IEEE 802.15.4e DSME Networks”, proposes different methods to improve the Quality of Service of IEEE 802.15.4e networks.
In this document, Harrison explores the functionalities of the IEEE 802.15.4e (a IEEE standard for low-rate wireless personal area networks) MAC behaviors, keeping the Deterministic Synchronous Multi-channel Extension (DSME) as the major focus. As the DSME protocol has the capability to facilitate communication with bounded time, it opens possibilities of adaption into several time-critical application domains, including time and safety critical Advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) systems. In order to study this possibility, this thesis introduces a co-simulation framework that enables the simulation of an ADAS application scenario analyzing the relationship between different vehicle dynamics and the delay required for the system to operate safely, exploring the performance limits of different wireless network configurations.
The PhD jury committee was composed by Dr. Ye-Qiong Song, Professor of Computer Science, at the University of Lorraine, France; Dr. Zdenek Hanzalek, Professor at Institute of Informatics, Robotics and Cybernetics of the Czech Technical University, Prague; Dr. Paulo Portugal, Professor of Eletrotechnic and Computer science at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto; and Dr. Pedro Souto, Professor of Informatics at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto.
