Autonomous Driving and Platooning Robotic TestbedCISTER, Porto, Portugal
ABSTRACT:
In the latest years tremendous work has been done regarding autonomous driving, with very successful cases deployed around the world, with several improvements in perception, control, safety, communications and many more. However, several challenges still need to be tackled before we can get near level 5 automation.
In what concerns cooperation in ITS systems, for instance, the vehicular platooning scenario has gained significant interest over the past years, partially boosted by the possibility of involving communications in such scenarios, and holding promises of reduced energy consumption and CO2 emissions and traffic flow optimization.
However, validating such systems at an early stage is expensive and may impose significant safety concerns. In that regard, we present a low-cost robotic testbed based on ROS, consisting of three autonomous vehicles that enables the development and testing of various contributions to enable platooning scenarios, while encompassing ITS-G5 communications support.

Daniel Almeida was born in Porto, Portugal in March, 1996.
He graduated in Electrical and Computer Engineering at ISEP in 2017 with a Master's Degree in Systems and Automation at the same institution in 2019.
His major areas of interest are Embedded and Real-time systems and Industrial Automation.
Nuno Guedes was born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1996.
He graduated in Electrical and Computer Engineering at ISEP with a Master's Degree in Systems and Automation at the same institution in 2019
His main areas of interest are Embedded and Real-time systems, Safety, Automation and Control.
