A Simulation Approach for Increased Safety in Advanced C-ITS ScenariosCISTER, Porto, Portugal
ABSTRACT:
With the developments in areas like wireless communication networks and sensors, as well as the recent evolution on various topics of Computing, Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems(C-ITSs) became a hot topic for research, and are expected to be increasingly deployed in the future, bringing significant benefits to society.
However, there are still several challenges before more critical scenarios can reliably depend on such technologies.
In this presentation, we focus in analyzing Cooperative Platooning and particularly, in enabling a set of simulation tools capable of encompassing the supporting Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications guaranteed by the ETSI ITS-G5, the most widely accepted European communications standard for ITS.
Therefore this presentation shows the development of two co-simulation tools for analysing C-ITS scenarios:
First, COPADRIVe is a co-simulation tool joining together a network simulator and a robotic simulator, enabling a realist parallel simulation of both control and communications. Second, another co-simulation tool, that uses a a hardware-in-the-loop approach, bridging a robotic simulator with real communications via an On-Board-Units (OBUs) in the loop. Both tools were developed and used as the means to test and analyze Platooning scenarios and other relevant software components for such applications. Importantly, these tools were developed in line with the R&D European Projects SafeCOP and ENABLE-S3, in which CISTER was an active participant.
BIO:
Bruno Vieira was born in Porto, Portugal in 1996.
He has a MSc degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from ISEP, completed during his initial 2 years of research work carried out at CISTER, in line with the SafeCOP project. Primarily, his work was focused on Vehicular Platooning, aiming at developing simulation tools to evaluate such scenarios, bridging autonomous control and wireless inter-vehicle communications, focusing on the ETSI ITS-G5 standard and its adequacy to platooning. From this work, a state of the art simulation tool has emerged, COPADRIVe, a tool that brings together network and robotic simulations for C-ITS scenarios using ROS, Gazebo and OMNet++.
Recently, additional work has been carried out focusing on wireless intra-vehicular networking, enabled by the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, always aiming at applying wireless communications technologies to transportation systems, for these to become increasingly intelligent, autonomous, safe and secure.
