Radio Resource Adaptation in Low-power Wireless Networks
30, Mar, 2012 12:00-13:00 (1 hour)
CISTER, Porto, Portugal

ABSTRACT:
Reliability of communications is key to expand application domains for sensor networks. Since wireless sensor networks operate in the license-free industrial scientific and medical bands and hence share the spectrum with other wireless technologies, addressing interference is an important challenge.
In order to minimize the effects of interference, nodes can dynamically adapt their radio resources provided information about current spectrum usage is available.
In this talk I'll discuss how packet size affects two fundamental channel utility functions (Energy-per-useful-bit and throughtput) as well as the impact of error control techniques.
I will also show our Channel Quality metric is useful to estimate the channel condition in order to carry out dynamic resource adaptation and to improve low-power wireless networks reliability and energy-efficiency.
