Segmentation Aspects in Profibus

The Profibus Standard - EN 50170 - presents some guidelines in
order support segmented network topologies. However, the standard does
not specify some fundamental aspects about inter-segment traffic, namely
the data transfer mechanisms and time-related issues. The aim of this
document is both to give a brief survey of the EN 50170 guidelines and
also to present some hypothetical scenarios that show how segmentation
could be implemented from the authors' perspective.
