Enhancing P-NET Real-Time Properties Using Priority Queuing Mechanisms

Ref: HURRAY-TR-9808       Publication Date: 3, Jun, 1998

Abstract:
Fieldbus industrial communication networks aim at the interconnection of distributed process control and manufacturing applications. They constitute the base upon which real-time fault-tolerant distributed systems can be designed for these application areas. A potential large leap towards the use of Fieldbus in such time-critical applications lies in the evaluation of its temporal behaviour. In this paper we evaluate the ability of P-NET fieldbus networks to schedule real-time traffic. We develop the pre-run-time schedulability analysis, bounding the worst case response time of the sporadic traffic. As this bound depends crucially on the outgoing message's queuing strategy, which in P-NET is FIFO, we outline an alternate policy based on the message's deadlines, thus allowing for the support of tighter deadlines.
