Abstract:
As men is getting increasingly dependent on computer controlled systems, aspects as reliability, availability, safety and security also get a major importance. This document presents (in 60 pages) a commented translation of the 1992 Jean-Claude Laprie (ed.) book Dependability: Basic Concepts and Terminology. The original book is written in five languages (English, French, German, Italian and Japanese) and serves as a basis to the concepts and terminology adopted in the dependability scientific domain. The comments are mainly used to clarify some "not so trivial" translation to Portuguese, to clarify some theoretical concepts with practical applications and to compare the ideas presented by the author with the more recent evolution of Laprie's ideas, as well as with the concepts defended by other internationally recognised authors in the dependability area. A glossary of terms in Portuguese and a bilingual (Portuguese - English) are also included in the translation.
